It’s now Wegmans vs. Lidl in Northwest

Northwest D.C. is getting a Lidl discount grocery store, and it will be right next door to the soon-to-open Wegmans grocery store.

Lidl will open a 29,000-square-foot store at 4000 Wisconsin Ave., as part of Donohoe Cos.’ mixed-use redevelopment of office buildings formerly occupied by Fannie Mae. Upton Place will include close to 700 residential units in a six- and an eight-story building. It will include 100,000-square feet of retail and three courtyards.

Just one block away, at 3900 Wisconsin Ave., Roadside Development is wrapping up initial work on its larger, mixed-use redevelopment of the former Fannie Mae headquarters, anchored by Wegmans’ first store in the District.

When complete, Upton Place will include a six-story building and an eight-story building and will consist of three courtyards, two rooftop spaces, pool, a yoga studio and a fitness center. (Courtesy Donohoe Companies)
Wegmans will get the jump, expected to open this summer. Lidl is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2023.

But they are at different price points. Lidl is discount and Wegmans is more fancy with lots more prepared food and hot food.

It does have a lot, including a wine bar.

I wish we had a closer Lidl.

Prices are going up. There's a Lidl out toward Annandale. It has far more baked goods and vegetables than I'm used to at Aldi.

In Maryland, I’d go constantly. Hopefully Florida gets one someday.

They are a pain in the butt, who does not like to pay their bills from other electric contractors and GC's I know who have built them. I have built and remodeled over 10 Aldis, they at least pay bills, but still are a pain.

I buy all my meats from wegmans, their prices on family packs of stuff is the cheapest I have seen by far. I have not been in a lidl yet. I like wegmans, I can still get 2.99 a lb boneless chicken breast, and if I want I can get a 40 bucks steak while I am there.
