DeSantis calls in budget for New College to take over Ringling Museum from Florida State

Oversight of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art could fall under the New College of Florida umbrella with a new proposal from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

DeSantis called for New College to take over administrative responsibilities of the museum from Florida State University as part of his annual budget proposal for the 2025 legislative session beginning next month.

Such a move would end the partnership between The Ringling and Florida State that’s existed since 2000, when Florida State assumed leadership of the museum.

DeSantis published the recommendation as part of his proposed “Focus on Fiscal Responsibility Budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, which totals $115.6 billion. The bill, if approved by the Florida Legislature in this year's 60-day session, directs New College to take over responsibilities Aug. 1.

Just some more of DeSantis' unnecessary fuckery for no obvious reason. I suspect he considers FSU too woke, and wants to put a loincloth over Michelangelo's David replica in the museum's center court.

Iirc, his takeover of tiny New College was an exercise in raw, fascist power display. Tactical Peek Feb 5 #2

Perhaps his dictatorial power over FSU is more mitigated.

Hopefully.

*edit - In 2022, FSU had about 45,000 students and NC had 689.
