FL-SD14: Early voting data continues to show Dems struggling in SD 14 Special Election
As of 1 p.m. Friday, Democrats remained about 2,000 votes behind Republicans in ballots cast in the Special Election for Senate District 14.
That’s a great sign for Republican Rep. Josie Tomkow as she seeks to keep the seat in the red column in a race against Democrat Brian Nathan.
Democrats have been eyeing the district for a flip since its former occupant, Republican Jay Collins, left office to serve as Lieutenant Governor alongside Gov. Ron DeSantis. It was Collins who flipped the seat back to Republican control in 2022, defeating incumbent then-Sen. Janet Cruz after she flipped the seat blue only four years prior to that.
While SD 14 has a history of being swingy, voter registration numbers solidly favor Republicans. But Democrats have been hoping that a Midterm-year Special Election could give them a boost by tapping into so-called soft Republicans, independents and political moderates frustrated by soaring prices and looking for a change. Historic trends also favor the party out of power in Washington in Midterm years.
