University System of Georgia to get new chancellor
Georgias university system will soon have a new chancellor thanks to the retirement of current chancellor Hank Huckaby.
The university system made the announcement earlier this week following a Board of Regents meeting.
Public higher education touches all aspects of our society. It is the fabric that holds us together and is an investment that pays dividends for life, Huckaby said in the statement. The University System is one of the great strengths of Georgia, and I am grateful to have been able to serve with the faculty and staff who bring it to life every day to serve our students.
Huckaby carries the legacy of consolidating campuses around the state and reducing the number of schools to 29 (from 35). One trophy he wont take home, however, is that of reduced college tuition costs. Huckaby has drawn fire during his tenure as he and the Board of Regents approved raises from university presidents around the state, further driving up the cost of attendance. Both the Board of Regents and Huckaby defended the actions citing retention purposes.
