Georgia approves new coal ash rules

Despite being even more stringent than federal regulations, many environmentalists are not satisfied after Georgia’s top environmental board unanimously approved new coal ash rules Wednesday.

The new rules, which were approved by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, apply to the storage, handling and disposal of coal ash across the state of Georgia.

Due to the new rules, Georgia Power will close several on-site ponds which have been used to store ash.

The new stringent rules apply to even more coal ash storage and disposal site than covered by federal law. Under the new rules landfills that accept ash much now routinely test groundwater for contamination.
