Georgia House of Representatives think Spaceport is out of this world

There was a play on words today before the House vote on HB 1, Georgia Spaceflight Act, but there was a serious vote to propel economic development for Southeast Georgia and the coast.

As Rep. Spencer took to the House floor to introduce HB 1 for a vote, a fellow representative from the floor asked Spencer that “if the bill passes will the space industry take off?” Rep. Spencer followed up with “it will be out of this world.”

Rep. John Corbett (R-Lake Park), who represents a southwestern section of Camden County, stated that counties in Southeast Georgia are losing population or some counties are “staying the same,” and the reason for such economic stagnation is due to a lack of high-quality jobs. Corbett goes on to say that “it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why that is happening.”

Following Corbett was Rep. Jeff Jones (R- Brunswick) who asked for support for HB 1 to help economic development in Southeast Georgia. Finally, Rep. Ed Setzler (R-Acworth) praised the community of Camden County for not asking for a monetary handout from the legislature, but only asking for a chance to create competitive economic conditions for all of Georgia. The bill received favorable passage of a total vote count of 162-5.
