Bill bans petroleum pipelines on Georgia coast

Legislation that prohibits the construction of petroleum pipelines along the coast passed the state senate late last week.

“(N)o permit shall be issued for any new petroleum pipeline or any extension within any area included within the Georgia coastal zone management program,” Senate Bill 191 states in part.

That would amount to a 50-mile wide coastal swath that’s free of potentially leaking petroleum pipelines, said Savannah Riverkeeper Tonya Bonitatibus.

“The idea is that ground and surface water are interrelated there so (a ban) will protect them,” she said.
