Confusion sparked among Columbus voters over election ballots tied to upcoming mayor's race

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — As Georgians head to the polls for two Public Service Commission races this week, some Columbus voters have been left confused — wondering why the high-profile 2026 mayor’s race isn’t on their ballot.

Election officials in Muscogee County say the mix-up stems from the unusual timing of a statewide special election in an odd-numbered year and the early activity surrounding next year’s local races.

“Voters are confused about what’s on the ballot,” said Nancy Boren, Muscogee County’s director of Elections and Registration. “This special election, in an odd-numbered year — it’s very unusual. I’ve been doing elections for 30 years, and this is my first time having a special statewide election in November.”

More than 500 people have already cast ballots in the Public Service Commission races. But according to poll workers, some arriving voters expected to see city contests listed.
