I saw Michelle and Mr. Sam today.
It is quite unusual for state-wide democratic candidates to come up to our tiny and very red county (Towns) but they made two stops here.
Michelle is very relaxed and confident. She pointed to four recent polls that have her with a slight lead. She is a very good speaker, and her remarks were well received (thank goodness we had no hecklers). Her message was short on specifics, but she touched on the importance of early childhood education, the need for affordable and accessible community, technical & university education, and immigration reform. Both she and her father pounded away at the gridlock in Washington because of polarizing politics, and the republican's willingness to shut down government to score political points. She clearly positions herself as someone who will cooperate and compromise when necessary to get laws passed. I thought it was interesting that neither of them made any mention of foreign policy.
I left feeling more confident about her chances. I think she has positioned herself to pull in independents and any remaining sane republicans. Georgia is not yet ready for a true progressive state-wide candidate, but I would be pleased to have Michelle as our senator.
