It'a ʻauwana night in Hilo at the Merrie Monarch hula festival and live online at the link below.

Oh, so much fun! It’s 7:15 here now…will be going till maybe 11-12. Go catch em, go!
(I can tell you it’s way more comfortable to watch from home than to sit on those hard chairs for 6+ hours, though there really is nothing like being in Hilo during Merrie Monarch. If I can find a YouTube video, I will share the cutest one from Mark Keli’ihoʻomalu; it was a kāne hula (menʻs hula) of 1890’s Honolulu newspaper boys. So so fun! Plus I leaned something new about King Kalākaua.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It’s the biggest hula competition on Earth!

The 2024 Merrie Monarch Festival performances kick off Wednesday at Hilo’s Edith Kanakaole Stadium and continues through Saturday — when overall competition winners will be announced.

One of my faves fron ʻauwana night, about late 1890’s-early 1900s newsboys for the newspaper Hōku Pakipika, which King David Kalākaua ran!

This hālau is usually a little…unusual, making up new steps in kahiko, liʻdat. But it served them here!

The Merrie Monarch youtube channel will have many more amazing and lovely hula. So very special. Mahalo for appreciating too!
