Less than four months ago, Attorney General Lisa Madigan indicated she would run for a fifth term in 2018. That is, in fact, the plan, yes, she said at a news conference.
Not so fast. Madigan announced Friday she would not seek re-election, knocking the Illinois political establishment off its cocksure forecasting track. She has been a staple on the Democratic ticket since 2002, has maintained popularity statewide and was considered the front-runner in next years election against the only announced and active Republican candidate so far, attorney and former Miss America Erika Harold.
It should be a happy day for Illinois, Madigan told us during a phone call Friday afternoon. We can have somebody work in public service, decide on their own terms to go elsewhere and do something great. Im going to take a break, do something different.
No, shes not running for governor (yet) or Chicago mayor or the U.S. Senate. She is not terribly interested in being a judge: Thats not me. They sit. I cant sit all day. She wont say what her next step will be she insists she will focus on the attorney general job until she retires next year but the possibilities are vast.

I think Lisa could be a charismatic leader. It's too bad her AG tenure is wasted while Mike jams Rauner.

(31,428 posts)She ran a terrific office and is well respected. Lisa will get back into politics. Give her time.
And leave Mike Madigan alone to do his job. He is doing a fine job of standing up to Rauner. We would be the equivalent of a third world country, or Wisconsin, without him. DUers are always calling on Democrats to grow a spine. Mike Madigan has one!
People have called him ruthless. That is okay with me. He is disciplined as well. He holds his coalition together. If we had more Democrats like him, we would not have trump or some of the messes that exist in other states.
We allowed Rauner the Ruiner to buy the last election. He did not "win" by much. We will get rid of him soon. It will take a long time to get this state back on track. Republicans always leave a mess that Democrats have to clean up.

(21,646 posts)her back from considering a run for governor, as she didn't want the 24/7 it takes, plus the traveling involved while raising kids. Or maybe having to work with Rauner has sucked big time and she just wants out

She would make a great Governor, senator or president one day....
