Governor's Mansion reopens to public on Saturday

Backers hope renovations turn neglected home into tourist destination

The wait is over. After more than a year of extensive renovations, the Illinois Governor’s Mansion, 410 E. Jackson St., will reopen its doors to the public this morning.

The mansion, the third-oldest governor’s mansion in the country still in use, had fallen into disrepair after years of deferred maintenance and neglect. And in many cases, it simply served as a barometer for how little time recent governors have spent in Springfield.

But with the dust on renovations now settled, Illinois first lady Diana Rauner said the mansion’s “revival” will instead serve as a symbol of what Illinois can be as the state celebrates its bicentennial year.
