The portrait of Mary Todd Lincoln that long hung in the executive mansion in Springfield was not painted by Francis Carpenter. The subject of the painting was not even Mary Todd Lincoln, but some anonymous woman. The entire back story of the painting is a fraud. But the truth may be just as intriguing as the elaborate lie. Interesting.
