Democrats aim to up their game via action, workshops

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A crowd of people crammed into a party room at Sylvia's Brick Oven on Nov. 15, 2016. It seemed a fresh effort would be needed for left-leaning Greater Lafayette residents to affect change — or at least hold the line on issues important to them.

The Tippecanoe County Democratic Party called the meeting in the wake of President Donald Trump's election, dubbing the event "Where do We Go From Here?"

To address that question, area Democrats have work to do. Heather Maddox, chair of the Tippecanoe County Democratic Party, said the group has two primary aims.

The party must train a bench of candidates to run for office — who must not only win, but be capable of performing the duties of their chosen office. The Democrats must also develop an activism network to help elect that bench of candidates and engage in separate political action.
