On the ballot: Some counties decide fate of medical cannabis in their community

BARDWELL, Ky. — With the election happening in less than one month, and medical marijuana set to come to Kentucky in January, many communities are preparing for medicinal cannabis with ballot initiatives.

The way the law was written is similar to alcohol — it gives counties and municipalities an opportunity to “opt out” of medical cannabis. Those that do not have a ballot measure will automatically be part of the new law.

McCracken County is a county that decided not to “challenge” the law, but eight western Kentucky counties and five western Kentucky cities have ballot measures that ask their citizens to decide if they want the cannabis business in their communities.

Ballard, Caldwell, Calloway, Carlisle, Crittenden, Hickman, Livingston, and Lyon Counties all have ballot measures that ask the community to vote for or against medical marijuana.
