Chairman of committee investigating Gov. Matt Bevin resigns

FRANKFORT — The chairman of a legislative committee investigating Republican Gov. Matt Bevin has resigned in protest because he said the outgoing Democratic speaker of the House has refused to let him subpoena the governor’s chief accuser.

Speaker Greg Stumbo created the committee in October to investigate claims by Democratic state Rep. Russ Meyer that Bevin canceled a transportation project in his district to punish him for refusing to switch parties. But Meyer did not respond to multiple requests to testify under oath before the committee.

Committee Chairman Jim Wayne said Thursday that Stumbo denied his request to issue Meyer a subpoena.

“The speaker does not want any Democratic House member to be subpoenaed by the committee,” said Wayne, a Democrat from Louisville. “It appears the Speaker’s granting of power to subpoena witnesses was conditional, making our efforts to arrive at the truth regarding charges against the governor impossible.”
