Arrest warrant issued for prominent former east Kentucky lawyer Eric Conn involved in fraud scheme

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky has issued an arrest warrant for Eric C. Conn, a prominent former east Kentucky lawyer who pleaded guilty in March for his role in a massive federal disability fraud scheme.

Conn removed his electronic monitoring device, according to a press release from Louisville's FBI branch Saturday, and his location is currently unknown.

Conn once ran one of the largest disability practices in the nation and became known throughout Kentucky after promoting his firm though memorable billboards, commercials with "Conn's hotties," and the moniker "Mr. Social Security." He was indicted for his role in a $550 million social security fraud scheme in April 2016 and later pleaded guilty in March 2017 to stealing from the Social Security Administration and bribing a federal judge.

An FBI agent testified in April 2016 that one of Conn's former employees said Conn told him he would flee to Ecuador to avoid prosecution for his role in the social security scheme. The FBI agent also said two other former employees said Conn said he would escape to Cuba.

Fugitive lawyer says he's fled the US using fake passport

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jun 25, 2017, 10:05 PM ET

A fugitive Kentucky lawyer at the center of a nearly $600 million Social Security fraud case has fled the country using a fake passport and has gotten help from someone overseas with a job to help support himself.

The flamboyant disability lawyer Eric Conn, in an email exchange with The Lexington Herald-Leader over the weekend, told the paper he flew to a country that does not have an extradition agreement with the U.S.

The paper reported Sunday that it tried to verify Conn's identity by asking him questions that only he could answer, including his Social Security number, which it obtained from court documents, and details about one of his marriages. He answered correctly, the paper said.

Scott White, Conn's attorney, said that he also received emails that originated from the same address and from a person he believed to be Conn.
