Andy Beshear storms out after GOP lawmaker grills him over Purdue Pharma settlement
FRANKFORT, Ky. A furious Attorney General Andy Beshear walked out of a legislative committee meeting Thursday after a Republican member grilled him extensively about a settlement with a drug company reached before Beshear ever took office.
Beshear, a Democrat who had attended to discuss his efforts to sue more drug companies over the state's heroin epidemic, objected when the discussion turned into what he said was a blatantly partisan political attack. He fielded questions for about an hour before he announced he was leaving.
"I have not seen a constitutional officer treated this way by this body," Beshear told the committee of mostly Republicans. "It feels like an attack."
But Sen. Danny Carroll, a Paducah Republican, who led the questioning before the Program Review and Investigations Committee, said he had no political motives although he acknowledged he had prepared his questions with help from the office of Gov. Matt Bevin, a Republican and bitter political enemy of Beshear.
