Gov. John Bel Edwards signs automobile, State Police legislation into law
Gov. John Bel Edwards has approved legislation that drew opposition from Tesla automobile enthusiasts and another new law that will ease a state nepotism law to allow the new Louisiana State Police superintendent's son to keep his job on the force.
The two bills were the most prominent in a list of legislation Edwards announced he had signed into law on Tuesday -- just days ahead of the end of the legislative session. Edwards has signed 71 measures and vetoed none to date.
Senate Bill 107, which became Act 45 with Edwards' signature, prompted petitions from fans of electric carmaker Tesla after it was amended to include new language related to auto manufacturers and dealers. It was passed at the urging of the Louisiana Auto Dealers Association.
Edwards met with advocates for the local dealers, as well as with executives from Tesla, before signing the legislation.
