Blanco nearing final days, but calls it 'wonderful time' in her life
LAFAYETTE Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco, conceding she is on a "countdown" of her life, said she will love Louisiana to the end as she was honored here Tuesday with the naming of a section of U.S. Highway 90 in her honor.
Blanco, who is suffering from terminal cancer and in hospice, looked frail but was able to stand without assistance as Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards ceremonially signed Senate Bill 134 to designate "Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco Highway."
"This has been a wonderful time for me even though it's be a time of my countdown," said Blanco, 76. "All of us think they'd like to die peacefully in their sleep, but let me tell you when people have a chance to make up ... that's a remarkable way to go."
Edwards called the highway designation a small gesture to honor the service of Blanco, whose term will always be linked to hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
