Maine man jailed, must repay $360K to former employer

WISCASSET, Maine — A Bristol man has been sentenced to three years in prison and must pay back $359,891.75 to his former employer as part of a plea deal in an embezzlement case.

Joseph F. Corson, 52, pleaded guilty Monday, Feb. 27, to one count of Class B theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, according to court documents. He was sentenced to eight years in custody with five years suspended, plus three years of probation.

He must pay the $359,891.75 in restitution to Alan MacPhee, owner of Alan J. MacPhee Enterprises and Ideal Septic Service Inc.

Corson’s probation conditions prohibit contact with MacPhee and require him to make restitution payments. If he violates his probation conditions, he could return to custody for up to five years, the suspended portion of his sentence.

I believe this is the proper way to handle crimes of this sort. Make the victim whole again. A nice fine would be in order as well, but this is good.

Jail time really serves no purpose here other than the "encouragement" to get the repayments to the victim.

You cant make restitution the only penalty for theft. You don't let someone commit a robbery and tell them if they give the money back, they don't have to serve any jail time

Probation and suspended sentence. I would rather non violent offenders be sentenced to restitution than serving time at taxpayers expense. Offenses involving violence or weapons, different story.
