Last week, as the House debated the fiscal year 2019 Department of Defense Appropriations bill, I took action to double federal funding for the Fisher House Foundation, an incredible nonprofit that provides free lodging near hospitals for military and veteran families.

My bipartisan amendment passed the House and was added to the overall bill, which also passed the House in a strong bipartisan vote.

My amendment will help more military and veteran families be together while their loved ones receive care and I think that’s something we can all agree on. Fisher House does amazing work and is truly beloved across the country. They’ve also been a very good partner with the federal government for a long time. Unfortunately, there is a growing need for their services and we should increase our support so they can expand their reach to more families.

Founded in 1990, The Fisher House Foundation builds new houses and assists in the coordination of support for the homes. Currently, there are 76 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations and 32 VA medical centers, and once built, these homes are donated to the United States government. Fisher House has served over 335,000 families, provided over eight million days of lodging and saved military families more than $407 million in out-of-pocket expenses. They have a four-star (out of four) rating from Charity Navigator, an A+ rating from Charity Watch and have been awarded the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence.

My amendment was cosponsored by Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Rep. Don Young (AK-AL), Rep. Ann Wagner (MO-2), Rep. Darren Soto (FL-9) and Rep. Peter Welch (VT-AL). As the Senate works through their appropriations bill, I will continue my push to support Fisher House in every way possible.

Sincerely,

John
