WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The injured bald eagle rescued Wednesday evening after it was found on the Metro tracks near the Morgan Boulevard Station in Landover has been euthanized.

D.C.’s City Wildlife said Thursday the eagle’s injuries in its right wing were determined to be “too severe” to save it following a thorough examination and consultations with other wildlife veterinarians. ... X-rays showed that the eagle had multiple fractures in its wing that they said could not be repaired. ... “We would, of course, had loved to have saved this bird,” City Wildlife said.

The eagle was rescued by Metro Transit Police and wildlife personnel after it was spotted on the tracks of the Blue/Silver lines around 5:15 p.m. The situation caused delays and trains to single track in the area, according to Metro.

Officials told ABC7 that the bald eagle, estimated to be 5 years old, would possibly have been taken to the Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research facility in Newark, Delaware, for rehabilitation had a recovery been possible.
