Chesapeake Bay Bridge: 43 Vehicles, Series of Accidents, 5-Hr Closure, Westbound Span: 'Chain Crashes'

As many as 43 vehicles were involved in a chain reaction of crashes Saturday morning on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge that injured 13 people and snarled traffic for 5 hours.
Though none of the injuries were life-threatening, 2 peoples injuries were serious, Sgt. Brady McCormick of the Md. Transportation Authority Police wrote in a news release. The injured motorists were being treated at local hospitals.
The crash began at around 8 a.m. on the westbound bridge when about 23 cars were involved in a multi-vehicle pile-up, McCormick wrote. Within seconds, an additional 20 cars were involved in secondary accidents.
For the next 5 hours, east- and westbound traffic alternated directions in the bridges eastbound lanes. All lanes had reopened in both directions at 1:50 p.m., according to the news release. The cause of the crashes remain under investigation.
