Punxsutawney Phil may have declared that spring is right around the corner, but given his poor track record, it seems worth delving a bit deeper into snow chances across the Washington area for the weeks ahead. In the past, this period has proved quite stormy — especially during El Niño years like the present one.
Our analysis suggests that winter is far from over. Although the region is in a dry stretch and the weather is forecast to be tranquil and springlike at times through the weekend, it seems that a stormier pattern — like the one earlier this winter — will return next week.
Historically, there are still four to five weeks left for winter storms to dump snow and ice over the area, even as the sun rises higher in the sky and average temperatures increase.
