Lansing begins sending out absentee ballots

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Absentee ballots are going out to Michigan voters this week.

For staff and volunteers in Lansing, election day is now more like election weeks. Still 40 days from the election, Lansing city clerk Christ Swope and volunteers spent their Wednesday sending out over 21,000 absentee ballots to Lansing voters.

“What we’re doing today is matching absentee ballots with the number that’s up there on the envelope, getting it ready to mail out and doing that a few thousand times,” Election worker, Gail Parker explained.

Ballot initiatives passed in 2018 and in 2022 have expanded voter rights and made absentee voting available to everyone. Since then, Swope said he’s seen more and more people voting early or absentee. He says while that does create more work for them, he said their commitment to ensuring every legal vote is counted has not waived.
