Michigan House Republicans threaten judicial funding over proposed court rule on ICE arrests
(
Michigan Advance) State Rep. Bradley Slagh (R-Zeeland) and 11 of his GOP colleagues in the Michigan House sent a letter to Chief Justice Megan Cavanagh of the Michigan Supreme Court urging the court to reject a proposed rule that would prohibit any civil arrests from taking place in a courthouse while attending a court proceeding or having legal business in the courthouse, a rule that would apply to most ICE arrests.
This misguided proposal seems to contradict the very purpose of the court buildings themselves, which is to provide a place where laws are enforced and justice served, the letter reads, adding that it could make our courthouses refuges for dangerous and unlawful individuals.
The letter goes on to call the proposed rule a violation of separation of powers, and says that should the rule be adopted, it is difficult to see how this would not have an impact on the future funding of some court operations, as the courthouse would now be an impediment to the efficient administration of justice.

The proposal has already garnered significant public debate, with over 2,500 submitted online comments in the courts public comment period, including comments in support from Attorney General Dana Nessel and state Sens. Mary Cavanagh, Jeremy Moss and Stephanie Chang, all Detroit-area Democrats. The proposal also received unanimous support from lawyers and advocates during a public hearing on the proposal. ....................(more)
