5 candidates vying for Jackson mayor in August primary election

JACKSON, MI – Five candidates are vying for an open mayor seat in Jackson.

On the ballot are Christy May Davis, who served as Ward 5 City Council member for one year; former mayor Derek J. Dobies, previously in office from 2017 to 2021; Shalanda Hunt, now representing Ward 5 on City Council; Dena K. Morgan, a nonprofit leader; and John Wilson, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2023, 2021 and 2015 and as a write-in candidate in 2013.

The race is nonpartisan. Jackson voters will select one candidate and the top two vote getters will move on to the November general election.

Current Mayor Daniel Mahoney, elected in 2021 and 2023, opted not to run in 2026.
