Emergency declared in Mississippi flooding
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency in four counties Saturday after days of heavy rain and severe flooding throughout the South.
The counties of Adams, Amite, Pike and Wilkinson will receive state assistance for response and recovery associated with the storms. Amite County received 14 inches of rain over 48 hours, starting Friday.
I want to make sure all Mississippians that were forced out of their homes by this flooding are taken care of, Bryant said in a release. This state of emergency will ensure state resources are available to all local governments that need help.
The American Red Cross and Mississippi Department of Human Services has been established in Adams county, located at 323 Liberty Road in Natchez, for residents displaced by flooding. Mississippi Emergency Management reports 56 people stayed in the shelter Friday night.
