Ballots for Sargent Pool bond election due July 15

SARGENT – Voters in Sargent are again considering whether to approve a bond issue for a new swimming pool. The election is being conducted entirely by mail.

The pool, which was built in 1960, has a number of issues that have made it no longer usable.

This is the third attempt by the city to pass a bond for the pool, at a cost of about $4 million. In November the measure failed by just three votes.

The cost has remained the largest sticking point for voters. In an email to KBEAR, former council member Ron Jepsen wrote that approving the bond would not be fiscally responsible. Beyond the bond itself, he said operating the pool costs more than it brings into the city. Jepsen argued that taxpayer money would be better spent on other projects such as updating the city’s water system.
