Nebraska Legislature's Revenue Committee approves tax reform package

LINCOLN — Cheers and criticism greeted the package of income and property tax changes that emerged from the Legislature’s Revenue Committee Wednesday.

Gov. Pete Ricketts hailed the package as “great news for growing Nebraska.”

“These reforms will bring much-needed tax relief for hardworking Nebraska families, small businesses, and entrepreneurs,” he said. But Renee Fry, executive director of the OpenSky Policy Institute, a Lincoln-based think tank, called the proposal “irresponsible policy.”

“It does little to help the middle class but will force year-over-year cuts to higher education, K-12 schools, public safety and other vital services,” she said.
