1,007 people sign letter to UNR president demanding action against white nationalism

Over 1,000 faculty members, students and community members have signed a letter addressed to University of Nevada, Reno President Marc Johnson demanding the university take action over several instances of white nationalism on campus.

The letter comes days after Charlie Kirk, executive director of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, was invited to speak at the campus, sparking protests. Turning Point USA has been linked to several white nationalist activists and organizations and keeps a "professor watchlist," according to the Anti-defamation League.

But the letter lists Kirk's visit as just one of several "concerning" incidents that they say the university has failed to properly address.

"We are dismayed by the many white supremacist, anti-Semitic, sexist, and anti-LGBTQ messages that have been posted, painted, carved, or otherwise displayed in dorms, classrooms, campus buildings, and online," the letter states in its opening paragraph. "We are deeply alarmed by your administration’s inadequate response to the presence and impacts of Turning Point USA ... on our campus, and by your failure to fully support students who organize anti-racist speech, protest, and action."
