Essex Democrats will hold first open convention

Essex County Democrats will begin holding conventions to endorse candidates for the primary election, ending a tradition of the county chairman awarding party support in consultation with key elected officials and municipal chairs.

The changes follow the elimination of county organization lines and the establishment of office block voting in primary elections. Convention winners will be permitted to use the organization’s slogan on the ballot.

The first convention will include an endorsement in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Essex’s new process includes a pre-convention screening committee that would send a recommendation to the full convention – county committee members are delegates – if a candidate received 50% of the votes with no runoff; otherwise, no recommendation is made.
