Central Ward Special Election Will Not Be Held In Tandem With April BOE Election

NEWARK - A special election for the vacant Newark Central Ward seat will not occur at the same time as the April 15 school board election and will have to wait until the November general election, a judge ruled Wednesday, Feb. 19.

The court order did not detail Essex County Judge Robert Gardner’s reasons for denying the city’s plea to hold a special election for the Central Ward seat concurrently with the school board election.

Attorney Scott Salmon of Jardim Meisner Salmon Sprague & Susser, representing the city, also declined to comment.

The judge’s decision means that a City Council seat will not appear on the April 15 school board election ballot, in which 16-year-olds can vote for the first time.
