NJ Advance Media wins one of nation's top journalism prizes for 'Project Extreme'
By NJ.com Staff
NJ Advance Media won one of the nations preeminent journalism awards for political reporting on Thursday for a series that examined the rise of extremism in New Jersey, a state with a tradition of moderate politics.
Project Extreme, a yearlong investigation led by Spencer Kent that probed the mainstreaming of hate in the Garden State, took home the Toner Prize for Excellence in Local Political Reporting, an award granted annually by Syracuse University.
The winning entry included pieces that probed how a loose confederation of far-right influencers found an audience in New Jersey; how threats to public officials have become commonplace; and how one countys embrace of the ultra-right led to scorched-earth fights among its leaders.

In awarding the prize to NJ Advance Media, the judges said the series illuminated the threat extremism in its many forms presents to democracy.
