Who is running for mayor in Newark in 2025?
Newark will have its second mayor in two years this April.
Current Mayor Jerry Clifton was elected in January 2024 to finish former Mayor Stu Markham's term after a sudden resignation in September 2023. Clifton had been mayor from 2019 to 2022 and had spent decades in city government. He said he wasn't going to run again late last year.
He endorsed Newark's Deputy Mayor and City Council member Travis McDermott for the role. McDermott has already served as acting mayor during the period between Markham's resignation and Clifton's special election. He was elected to the City Council in 2020 and represents the north side of downtown Newark and the area near the Newark Reservoir.
He does not have to give up his seat during the campaign for mayor, and if he wins the office, there will be a special election for his vacated seat.
