Bayard terminates police chief

The Bayard City Council met Tuesday morning for a closed special meeting to discuss whether Chief of Police Lee Alirez would remain employed by the city.

Alirez, who has been the focus of several recent harassment complaints, was not in attendance, as he was placed on administrative leave by the council, which barred him from being within any city buildings, Councilor Eloy Medina told those present before the meeting began.

After Mayor Chon Fierro called the meeting to order, the council approved the meeting agenda, which was solely devoted to discussion of the “limited personnel matter” regarding “possible disciplinary action and/or termination” of Alirez. The council then moved to a back room within City Hall for their closed discussion of the matter.

Santa Clara Police Chief Lonnie Sandoval attended the meeting, as well as several Bayard residents. One of the victims of alleged harassment was also present, along with two family members of another alleged victim.
