Abuzuaiter (D), Perkins (R) advance in Greensboro mayoral primary to November election

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The matchup is set for next month’s mayoral race in Greensboro.

Polls closed at 7:30 p.m. after a round of early voting culminating in Tuesday’s primary. Four candidates had declared their intention to run: Greensboro Councilwoman Marikay Abuzuaiter, businessman Richard Beard, Akir Khan and former Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins.

Sitting Mayor Nancy Vaughn declined to run again after over a decade in the office.

In a municipal primary, the top two vote-getters will advance unless there are more than two candidates to be voted for in a given race. The Greensboro City Council’s At-Large race will have multiple candidates advancing, for instance. In the case of any race with more than two candidates, two will advance from the primary.
