Provisional ballots don't change unofficial local election night results, canvass set for March 13

WATAUGA — Watauga County’s unofficial election night results held firm after the Board of Elections reviewed 166 provisional ballots.

Out of the ballots, 19 were not approved by the Watauga County Board of Elections, 15 were approved and the rest were partially approved.

A ballot was partially counted if the voter cast their ballot in the wrong precinct on Election Day. For example, if a voter was in the wrong precinct that had the Board of Commissioners race on the ballot, their vote for that race would not count. Bipartisan members of the BOE then looked at the ballot and marked the correct one with any races that were on every ballot, like the race for governor or clerk or court.

“Whatever contest they were eligible to vote for will be counted on their correct assigned precinct ballot style, and if there’s a contest on that assigned precinct ballot that was not on the one they voted, that will be left blank and will come up as an under vote,” Watauga Director of Elections Matt Snyder said at the provisional ballot meeting.
