New Hanover County Elections Board discusses director's status after special meeting

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County’s elections director will remain on administrative leave following a nearly three-hour board meeting Monday night, but sources indicate the elections board will soon move closer to removing her from the position.

DeNay Harris, who has been on the job for less than two months, was placed on administrative leave last Thursday. WECT first reported the suspension on Friday.

Elections Board Chair Jamie Getty declined to answer questions about Harris after Monday’s meeting, citing state personnel statute. She said she’s not concerned about any misconduct allegations Harris has made.

On Friday, Harris told WECT she believes her suspension was retaliation for alleging misconduct by top county leaders, including Getty and County Manager Chris Coudriet. Harris said she’s been bullied by top county leaders, including Coudriet and Getty, after raising concerns.
