Oklahoma health care providers speak out on proposed SoonerCare cuts

Oklahoma’s Medicaid agency is practicing “horrible public policy” by recommending that nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other midlevel providers receive less money for the services they provide to SoonerCare patients, a medical professional and board member said Thursday.

Daniel McNeill, president of the Oklahoma Academy of Physician Assistants, told the Oklahoma Health Care Authority’s medical advisory committee that if the proposed budget cuts are approved, he could see a boycott movement calling for every physician assistant to drop out of the Medicaid program until the reimbursement rate is restored.

“On a personal note, I’ve volunteered countless hours to this agency,” McNeill, a medical advisory committee member, said. “And I provided to thousands of SoonerCare members over the past 20 years, and this is how you show your appreciation? I’m personally insulted.”

Several nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other medical providers Thursday raised concerns at the authority’s medical advisory committee meeting about proposed provider rate cuts.
