Couple sues City of San Marcos over fight to remove symbol of man with KKK ties - KVUE

The symbol is on the front of the couple's home.

====================

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Living close to campus was important for Kristy Money and her husband, Rolf Straubhaar – both of whom are educators at Texas State University – when they bought their "forever" home in the historic district of San Marcos eight years ago.

When you have a house built in the 1930s, there’s a great deal of history but also plenty of work to put in.

-snip-

As Money mentioned, the "Z" represents Frank Zimmerman, a former mayor of San Marcos who built the house. In the mid-1920s, Zimmerman bought both The Marc and The Grand Opera House, but he also had heavy ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

“He hosted 'Klan Day' at his theatre,” Money said. “I mean, he didn’t just show ‘Birth of a Nation,' but he mentioned that it was his favorite movie.”

They didn't notice the Z on the balcony when they bought the house or ask where it came from? So now they complain about it.

It's a Z, not a hood shape or a Nazi symbol. Just ignore it or tell people that this former home was owned by a Klu Kluxer and the fact that it is now owned by a liberal is probably making him spin in his grave. Or better yet, ask to put a historic marker out front that says the terrible things he did in his lifetime so his name will always be remembered as a dirtbag racist.

The process is difficult requiring extensive research, submitting a nomination form to the Texas Historical Commission, review by committee, and then final approval by the National Park Service (I don't know how they are involved).

Since the home is in the historical part of San Marcos (I lived there for a brief time in 1988), I know that there are city regulations that prohibit the placing of signage without the city's approval so the couple is probably out-of-luck with your idea. The chances are even slimmer if there are any descendants of the Zimmerman family still live in the city.
