Blue Origin spaceship firm laying off 10% of workforce, including at West Texas launchpad
Blue Origin, billionaire Jeff Bezos aerospace company, is laying off more than 1,000 workers companywide, including at its West Texas launchpad, in a workforce restructuring.
The company's Launch Site One is located just outside Van Horn, about 120 miles southeast of El Paso. It employs about 500 people, Van Horn Mayor Duane Corrales reported in an email. He knew of 12 layoffs at the site as of Feb. 18, he said.
David Limp, Blue Origin chief executive officer, announced Feb. 13 that 10% of the company's workforce would be laid off. But the exact number of employees losing their jobs was not disclosed, nor how many people are employed by the company, or how each of its nine locations in the United States may be affected.
Jobs being eliminated are in engineering, research and development, and program/project management, Limp reported in a Feb. 13 email to employees. However, he also said the company would hire hundreds of people in the future.
