Salt Lake City Woman charged with child abandonment after leaving 9-year-old boy in vacant apartment
According to charging documents, the incident happened on October 1 when officers were called to a report of an abandoned 9-year-old child. The son identified himself as the son of Reyna Isabell Ortiz, 26.
The boy told police his mother took him to an empty apartment and left him there. He fell asleep but was awakened at 3 a.m. by two men he only knew as "Risky" and "Munchies". One of the men he recognized as a man who had previously stabbed his mother's boyfriend.
The men told the boy to leave so he left and began to wander around outside looking for his mom. He eventually walked into a nearby 7-Eleven store where he stayed for most of the day until a clerk called police. Police were not able to locate the mother. The boy was placed with his father.
On November 9, police found the boys mother after she was arrested for aggravated robbery. Ortiz has a prior criminal history, mostly for retail theft.
