Blown transformer prevents printing of Sunday Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune

WEST VALLEY CITY — A blown transformer that knocked out power to the facility that prints the Deseret News and The Salt Lake Tribune left both publications unable to print and deliver their Sunday editions.

“We regret that the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News, as well as the Sunday New York Times will not be printed tonight,” said Brent Low, president and CEO of Newspaper Agency Company. “Rocky Mountain Power assured us they are working to restore power as quickly as possible, but it could be a lengthy delay.”

Both Salt Lake papers have shared printing facilities via a long-running joint operating agreement. Low said the papers will be printed late and eventually delivered either later Sunday or with Monday’s edition.

Rocky Mountain Power was unable to determine exactly what caused the electrical transformer to fail and was deploying additional work crews to help expedite repairs.
