Fairfax County sees low voter turnout in special elections

In recent elections, Fairfax County has experienced low voter turnout, with fewer than 20% of registered voters casting a ballot in the most recent special elections. Turnout for recent elections has ranged from 12.57% at the low end to nearly 55% in the November gubernatorial election.

In the fall, the county reported that in the Sept. 9 special election for Congress, only 26.55% of registered voters voted, compared to 54.9% for the state-wide election in the November.

More drastically, in the Dec. 9 special election for Braddock District Supervisor, voter turnout was at 17.99%. Even worse, in the Jan. 13 special election for the District 11 delegate seat, only 12.73% of voters cast ballots, according to unofficial results from Fairfax County.

Following this downward trend further, in the Jan. 20 special election for District 17, 12.57% of voters cast ballots.

This is a real make-or-break election year. Do you want a sovereign country next year? Do you want democracy? People have GOT to understand they MUST vote to ensure it happens. We've got to have an overwhelming number of voters hitting the polls. Anything else, and the republicans' cheating measures will win out, I'm afraid. This election is not one for the timid or the apathetic. There can be no apathy to voting any longer, AFAIC. And once we DO take back government, one of the first new laws to hit the books must be declaring election day a holiday for everyone, as well as longer polling hours, and a true assessment and formula for electoral tools to the number of a region's voters. Just MO.
