Coast Guard crews suspend search for missing kayaker off Edmonds

EDMONDS — U.S. Coast Guard crews ended their search for a missing kayaker Monday in the water near Edmonds.

Between 9 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, a man, 50, left to kayak the area southwest of Edmonds, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Around noon, a citizen found an adrift kayak with the man’s car keys and a life jacket. The Coast Guard began searching for the man soon after.

Crews, including a cutter, response boat and helicopter, scoured the area Sunday. Around 8:30 p.m., an aircrew from Astoria, Oregon, responded. A boat from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife also assisted, said Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier.

Rescue crews aboard an 87-foot patrol boat searched the area overnight, according to the Coast Guard.

Cold water in an open boat and apparently not wearing a life vest. As a boater, I don’t think this man was prudent but I hope he’s found alive.
