Amtrak has broken ground on its $300 million maintenance facility in Seattles Sodo area.
Construction crews began building the foundation for the 100,000-square-foot facility last week, Amtrak said in a news release. PCL Construction Services was selected as the general contractor last fall.
The project will support more efficient maintenance practices, according to Amtrak. It will also support its new fleet of Amtrak Airo trains set to enter service on the Amtrak Cascade route next year.
The Pacific Northwest is a key priority for Amtrak, with the popular Amtrak Cascades line between Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, B.C. and points in between, as well as our Long Distance Coast Starlight and Empire Builder trains connecting the region, Roger Harris, Amtrak president, said in the release. "This critical investment will help us meet growing customer demand for a new era of rail with brand-new trains that will upgrade safety, reliability and comfort.
