Here's what it takes to be in Washington's top 1% of earners

Ranking in the top 1% of Washington earners requires an income of $756,256 — the eighth-highest total in the U.S.

That's according to a new Business Journals’ analysis of the latest IRS earnings data, which revealed the cutoff for the nation's top 1% of earners declined by 3% between 2021 and 2022, from $699,008 to $675,368.

While salaries were still rising at a rapid pace in 2022 on the strength of the pandemic recovery and the fierce battle for talent, the stock market posted dismal results that wiped out billions in value.

The cutoff to make the top 1% in Washington state declined 13.89% between 2021 and 2022. Since 2017, the required income is up 34.66%.

Now that I'm retired I don't even make a tenth of that.
