Suspicious envelope prompts evacuation at Kennewick election facility

Benton County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a suspicious envelope that arrived at an election facility in Kennewick yesterday.

Few details have been released about the envelope, but it prompted an evacuation of the facility. No county staff were harmed, and election staff were allowed to return to release the election results.

Benton County Auditor Chilton said the incident marked the first time the office has had to fully activate its security procedures for an item like this.

“This is the first time we’ve had to fully engage our security protocols because of this type of item and they went smoothly which is a good thing however we always take an opportunity following any of these types of situations to debrief with our safety coordinator,” Chilton said.
